Using Ad Lds Tools

Many of the tools you use to configure and manage AD LDS are the same tools you use to administer AD DS . The following GUI tools are available:

active Directory Schema snap-in Modifies the schema for AD LDS instances . You must first use the Regsvr32.exe command to register the Schmmgmt.dll file .

ADSI Edit Interactively manages AD LDS content through ADSI.

Ad LDS Setup Creates AD LDS instances .

You can also use the following general-purpose graphical user interface (GUI) tools in the process of managing AD LDS:

active Directory Sites and Services Configures and manages replication scopes for AD LDS instances . You must first update AD LDS instances to support replication objects .

event Viewer Audits AD LDS changes and logs old and new values for both objects and attributes

Server Manager Manages existing AD LDS instances .

Windows Server backup Backs up or restores AD LDS instances and their contents .

The following command-line tools are available if you change the directory to the %SystemRoot%\ADAM folder. (You need to run these tools in an elevated command prompt.)

aDaMInstall.exe Creates AD LDS instances.

aDaMSync.exe Synchronizes data from AD DS forest to AD LDS instance. You must first update the AD LDS instance to the AD DS schema.

aDaMUninstall.exe Removes AD LDS instances .

aDSchemaanalyzer.exe Copies schema contents from AD DS to AD LDS or from one AD LDS instance to another. The tool supports third-party LDAP directory schema copies .

The following tools are available directly from an elevated command prompt: Csvde.exe Imports data into AD LDS instances.

DCDiag.exe Diagnoses AD LDS instances . You must use the /n:NamingContext switch to name the instance to diagnose .

DSaCLS.exe Controls ACLs on AD LDS objects.

DSaMain.exe Mounts Active Directory store (.dit) backups or snapshots to identify their contents

DSDBUtil.exe Performs database maintenance, configures AD LDS ports, and views existing instances . The tool also creates one-step installations for transporting AD LDS instances through the install from media (IFM) generation process .

DSMgmt.exe Supports application partition and AD LDS policy management .

Ldifde.exe Imports data into AD LDS instances.

Ldp.exe Interactively modifies content of AD LDS instances through LDAP

NTDSUtil.exe Manages AD LDS instances but only if AD DS is also installed. (Microsoft recommends that you use dsbdutil.exe instead.)

RepAdmin.exe Analyzes replication so you can view potential issues .

You can also use the LDAP Data Interchange Format (LDIF) files as an instance creation and configuration tool. AD LDS installations can dynamically import LDIF files (. ldp) during instance creation and automatically configure the instance.
