Copying the WSUS Metadata

The last step in configuring a disconnected WSUS server is to copy the WSUS metadata from the export server to the import server. Unfortunately, there is neither a wizard nor a graphical user interface (GUI)-based means of exporting and importing the metadata. However, Microsoft has provided a command line utility for performing this task. By default, the utility is installed into the /Program Files/Update Services/Tools directory. In the final section of this chapter, we walk through moving over the metadata.

1. From the export server, click Start | Run and type cmd.exe.

2. Change to the directories where the WSUS program files were copied. (In our example, this is located at c:/Program Files/Update Services/Tools.)

3. Next, export the metadata using the following command: wsusutil export wsusex.cab wsusex.log. This specifies the cabinet file and log file that the WSUS utility will create for import onto the other server (see Figure 10.13). Press Enter to begin the export.

4. Once the export is complete, copy the .cab and .log files to removable media.

Once the removable media arrives at the location where the import server exists, follow these steps:

1. From the export server, go to a command prompt. Click Start | Run and type cmd.exe.

2. Change to the directory where the WSUS program files were copied. (In our example, this is located at c:/Program Files/Update Services/Tools.)

3. Next, import the metadata using the following command: wsusutil import wsusex.cab wsusex.log. This specifies the cabinet file and log file that the WSUS utility will import into the server (see Figure 10.14). Press Enter to begin the export. Do not be surprised if the import takes a considerable amount of time.

4. Once the import is complete, open the WSUS Administration window to verify that the import was successful. To verify, check to see if any new updates exist.
