virtual memory A kernel service that stores memory pages not currently in use on a mass-storage device to free occupied memory for other uses. Virtual memory hides the memory-swapping process from applications and higher-level services.

volume A storage area on a Windows Server 2003 dynamic disk. Dynamic volumes cannot contain partitions or logical drives. Windows Server 2003 dynamic storage supports five dynamic volume types: mirrored volumes, simple volumes, spanned volumes, striped volumes, and RAID 5 volumes. Dynamic volumes are accessible only to Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003.
